In a historic moment for the franchise, the Denver Nuggets have emerged as NBA champions for the very first time in their 56-year history. They secured a convincing 4-1 series victory over the Miami Heat in the 2023 Finals.

Entering Game 5 at Ball Arena with a commanding 3-1 series lead, Michael Malone's team completed the task at hand, triumphing with a 94-89 scoreline in front of their passionate home crowd.

Previously, the Nuggets had endured three consecutive defeats in the conference semi-finals from 2019 to 2021. In the preceding year, they suffered a 4-1 defeat in the first round against the eventual 2022 champions, the Golden State Warriors. However, this year, they overcame all obstacles and vanquished the Heat to etch their names in NBA history.

With this remarkable feat, the Nuggets join an elite club as only the second original American Basketball Association (ABA) franchise to capture the NBA championship. The San Antonio Spurs, five-time winners, are the only other team from the ABA to have achieved this honor.

Despite a sluggish start to the game, with only two successful three-pointers out of their first 22 attempts, the Denver Nuggets found themselves trailing 51-44 at halftime. However, it was Nikola Jokic who once again displayed his brilliance, leading the charge with an impressive 28 points and 16 rebounds.

In recognition of his outstanding performance throughout the NBA Finals, the 28-year-old was awarded the Bill Russell Trophy as the NBA Finals MVP. This achievement is even more remarkable considering that Jokic, drafted as the 41st pick in 2014, is now the lowest-drafted player to receive this prestigious accolade.

Furthermore, Jokic's triumph marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first center in 21 years to be crowned the NBA Finals MVP since Shaquille O'Neal achieved the honor in 2002. His remarkable postseason performance also sets a new record, as he becomes the first player to amass 500 points, 250 rebounds, and 150 assists in a single postseason campaign.

Jokic's exceptional contributions have solidified his status as one of the league's elite players, despite narrowly missing out on a third consecutive NBA MVP award, which ultimately went to Joel Embiid.

"I think he's showing other people nationally that he's real. Like what he's doing is real. The MVPs are real," Malone added on Jokic's record-breaking NBA Finals contributions amid derogatory comments over the Serbian 'stat-padding'.

"The silly narratives this year are just silly and somewhat ignorant. I think Nikola has gone through three rounds now where he's averaging a triple-double in the playoffs. Have you seen any stat padding out there? I'm serious. Enough of the silliness. The guy is a great player.

In the Nuggets' triumphant title-clinching victory, Michael Porter Jr. made a significant contribution with a double-double of his own. He recorded 16 points and 13 rebounds, showcasing his versatility on the court. Additionally, Jamal Murray showcased his skills with 14 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, making an impactful all-around performance in the historic win.
