Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been handed a five-game international ban following an altercation with spectators after Uruguay’s defeat to Colombia in the Copa America semi-final in July.

The 25-year-old was seen physically confronting Colombian fans in the stands after the final whistle, leading to the suspension and a fine of £15,145 ($20,000).

The incident occurred at the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina, where tensions escalated in a section of the stadium occupied by family members of the Uruguay players. Nunez climbed the railings and entered the crowded stands to confront the fans.

Jose Maria Gimenez, one of Nunez’s teammates, defended their actions, stating, "There was no police, and we had to defend our families." He attributed the brawl to "two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don't know how to drink."

South American football’s governing body, Conmebol, announced the disciplinary actions on Wednesday, banning five players, including Nunez, and fining 11 others for their involvement in the incident.

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-game ban, while Napoli defender Mathias Olivera, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez were each given three-game bans.

Uruguay’s coach Marcelo Bielsa, formerly of Leeds United, expressed his frustration over the sanctions, arguing that his players were forced to act in self-defense and deserved an apology from the Colombian fans involved. Bielsa dismissed the punishments as part of a "witch hunt," adding that "it is a shame."

These bans come as a significant setback for Uruguay, as they prepare for several crucial World Cup qualifying matches in September and October. Their next challenge is a qualifier against Paraguay in Montevideo on 6 September.

Darwin only stood up for his family, this suspension isn't justified
