Olmo rejoined Barcelona from RB Leipzig earlier this month in a deal worth around €60 million (£51 million). However, due to La Liga's strict financial regulations, he was unable to play until now.
His debut was made possible after Ilkay Gundogan returned to Manchester City and defender Clement Lenglet moved to Atletico Madrid, freeing up the necessary space for Olmo in the squad.
In a tense match against Rayo Vallecano, the home side took an early lead through Unai Lopez. It wasn’t until the hour mark that Barcelona found their equalizer, with Pedri finishing off a slick one-two with Raphinha.
The game seemed destined for a draw until Olmo, with the help of fellow Spain Euro 2024 star Lamine Yamal, curled in a beautiful left-footed shot to secure the victory late on.
With this win, Barcelona remains at the top of La Liga, having won all three of their opening matches, making them the only team with a perfect record so far. Olmo’s story came full circle as he scored his first goal for Barcelona, the club he left as a teenager to pursue his career in Europe.
