According to reports, Arsenal has been taken aback by the high wage demands put forth by William Saliba's agents as they negotiate a new contract. Saliba, who emerged as one of the top center-backs in the Premier League during the 2022-23 season before suffering a season-ending back injury against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League, impressed with three goals and an assist in 33 appearances for Arsenal.

Having waited three years for his competitive debut, Saliba started 27 consecutive Premier League games, solidifying his position in the team. However, his absence coincided with a dip in form for Arsenal, who won only five of their final 11 league matches. Rob Holding and Jakub Kiwior filled in the defensive line during his absence.

Despite the team's performance, Arsenal secured a second-place finish, earning qualification for the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season. The club is now focusing on securing contract renewals for their promising young talents, with Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Magalhaes having already committed to new deals. The renewal of Saliba's contract is the next priority for sporting director Edu.

Although Arsenal activated a 12-month extension in December to avoid losing Saliba on a free transfer this summer, he could still leave for nothing in 2024 unless a new agreement is reached. However, negotiations with the player's camp have hit a roadblock, with money being the main stumbling block, as per The Sun. Arsenal reportedly offered Saliba an improved contract worth £120,000 per week, tripling his current salary of £40,000. However, the demands made by his agents have left Arsenal stunned.

There is concern within Arsenal that Paris Saint-Germain could make a move for Saliba this summer, given their financial superiority over the Gunners. Arsenal, who are not willing to lose Saliba for free in 2024, are making every effort to reach an agreement. However, if no deal can be reached, they may be forced to sell the player. Arsenal originally signed Saliba from Saint-Etienne in 2019 for £27m, but he was immediately loaned back to the French club, followed by subsequent loan spells at Nice and Marseille.

Saliba's performances at Marseille earned him the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award for the 2021-22 season. Although Marseille attempted to secure his permanent signature, Mikel Arteta reassured him that he was an important part of Arsenal's plans.

Despite struggling with a back injury for the past few months, Saliba is not expected to undergo surgery, and Arsenal is hopeful that he will return to training for the start of the pre-season in July.

In addition to Saliba, PSG is also said to be monitoring the situation of Martin Odegaard. However, it is anticipated that the Arsenal captain will soon agree to new terms, as he is settled in North London.
