Tonali and Zaniolo, who were on Italy duty when the news broke, withdrew from the Azzurri squad after the revelations. Fagioli, not part of Luciano Spalletti's squad at the time, admitted to gambling on illegal platforms and received a seven-month suspension in October. This suspension means he won't be able to play competitively until the final weeks of the season in May.
Tonali, who was reported to be struggling with addiction, received a more severe 10-month ban. He confessed to betting on AC Milan to win matches while playing for the club. Zaniolo, on the other hand, faced no sanctions as it was believed he did not gamble on football games but only played blackjack and poker on the illegal platforms. He may escape with a fine.
Now, similar accusations have been brought against Florenzi, who is alleged to have engaged in the "abusive exercise of gambling or betting activities," according to Turin authorities. The 32-year-old is expected to be questioned by prosecutors in the coming days. Like Zaniolo, he is not believed to have bet on football matches or been subjected to threats or intimidation.
Florenzi, who spent two decades with Roma until 2022, joined AC Milan permanently for €2.7m (£2.4m) last summer. He has scored twice in 49 appearances for Milan, where he competes for minutes at right-back with Davide Calabria. In the current Serie A campaign (2023-24), Florenzi has made five starts, playing in various defensive roles, but is yet to feature in the Champions League starting XI.
The defender, part of Italy's Euro 2020-winning squad, has won 49 caps for the Azzurri but hasn't been called up to the national team since June 2022. Florenzi is expected to meet with prosecutor Manuela Pedrotta, and his defense strategy remains to be seen.
