Following an eighth-place finish last season, and narrowly missing out on the Conference League by a single point, Marseille is on a mission to climb higher, and they’ve kicked off this season in impressive form.
They opened the season with a 5-1 win over Champions League side Brest, and last weekend, they crushed Montpellier 5-0 with goals from Elye Wahi and Luis Henrique. Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood also contributed, marking his sixth goal of the season. Marseille now sits third in Ligue 1, three points behind leaders PSG and Monaco, and three points clear of fourth-placed Lille.
Roberto De Zerbi, formerly with Brighton, is off to a solid start at Marseille, bringing his creative style to Stade Velodrome. Meanwhile, PSG bounced back from a 2-0 Champions League loss to Arsenal with a 1-1 draw against PSV, thanks to a brilliant goal by Achraf Hakimi.
Back in Ligue 1, PSG, Monaco, and Lens are still unbeaten after eight matches. PSG secured an easy victory over Strasbourg last weekend, with goals from Senny Mayulu, Marco Asensio, Bradley Barcola, and Lee Kang-In.
As PSG pursues a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title, they lead the table, tied on points with Monaco, and hold a three-point edge over Marseille, who haven’t beaten PSG in their last seven league encounters.
INJURIES & SUSPENSION
Marseille is hoping to have left-back Quentin Merlin back in action for Le Classique on Sunday, as the 22-year-old rejoined training this week after recovering from a thigh injury. However, they’ll be without Valentin Carboni, who is out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury. For PSG, their attack has felt the impact of Kylian Mbappe’s summer departure, further strained by Goncalo Ramos’s recent ankle injury. They’re also missing World Cup-winning defender Lucas Hernandez, who has been sidelined since May with a cruciate ligament issue. Presnel Kimpembe is another absentee in defense, out with a muscle strain until next month, limiting PSG’s options at the back even more.
