Reports suggest that Manchester United is facing increased difficulty in selling club captain, Harry Maguire due to the player receiving a pay rise at Old Trafford this summer.

During the 2022-23 season, the 30-year-old made only 31 appearances for the Red Devils, with a mere 16 of those outings in the Premier League, resulting in his decline in the team's hierarchy.

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof have emerged as preferred options for starting roles in the central defense, while Luke Shaw was often chosen over Maguire at center-back, even in the absence of Varane and Martinez due to injury. Manchester United's head coach, Erik ten Hag, reportedly intends to sell the English international in order to generate funds for reinvestment in the squad this summer.

However, The Guardian reports that Maguire's contract includes a significant wage increase, which poses a challenge for the club to offload the defender in the current market. The article states that members of the first-team squad at Manchester United received salary hikes due to the club's qualification for the 2023-24 Champions League campaign.

While Maguire is allegedly open to switching clubs this summer, he is unwilling to take a financial hit and will make careful decisions leading up to the 2024 European Championship.

Currently, Maguire is still regarded as a starter for the England national team. However, if he continues to struggle for playing time in the upcoming season, it will be exceedingly difficult for Three Lions head coach Gareth Southgate to include him in the starting XI.

Maguire is rumored to be available for a fee between £30m and £40m. Several clubs, including Newcastle United and West Ham United, have been linked with the former Sheffield United youngster, and Paris Saint-Germain has previously expressed interest in him.
