Last time, Burnley played a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Manchester United, under Erik ten Hag, had a tough 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich in a thrilling Champions League match.
For Burnley, it was a bit of a tough game, as their striker Lyle Foster had a late goal disallowed because of a disputed handball. He also got a red card for elbowing Ryan Yates right before the game ended. Before Foster's incident, Burnley had scored first with a great shot from Zeki Amdouni. But Callum Hudson-Odoi from Nottingham Forest scored a fantastic curling goal to equalize.
This draw allowed Nottingham Forest to get back at Burnley a little for their loss in the EFL Cup's second round, where Amdouni also scored the winning goal. That victory remains Burnley's only win in the 2023-24 season so far.
However, Burnley did earn their first Premier League point in their fourth attempt with this draw. Before this, they had lost to Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur in three home matches. They had been at the bottom of the table before this point.
But now, only Luton Town has a worse record in the Premier League than Burnley. Burnley has lost their last five Premier League home games since April 2022, conceding at least two goals in each game.
As for Manchester United, they faced Bayern Munich and lost, despite scoring three goals at the Allianz Arena. Casemiro scored twice, and Rasmus Hojlund scored his first goal for the club, giving some hope to the Red Devils. However, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Harry Kane, who was once a transfer target for Manchester United, had already scored for Bayern. Mathys Tel added another goal for Bayern, and Casemiro scored his first goal for the evening. Unfortunately, the game ended right after Casemiro scored from Bruno Fernandes's free kick. This loss was Manchester United's third consecutive defeat, following 3-1 losses to Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Off the field, Manchester United has been dealing with various issues, and their on-field performance hasn't been great either. Erik ten Hag, their coach, has been trying to motivate the players, asking them to reflect on their performance, especially their defense.
As they head into Saturday's game, Manchester United is one of four Premier League teams that haven't earned any points in away games this season. They've lost four of their last five top-flight away matches. However, they do have a five-game unbeaten run against Burnley, which might give some comfort to their fans.
INJURIES & SUSPENSION
Due to his red card against Nottingham Forest, Burnley striker Foster, who had assisted Amdouni's first-half goal, will have to serve a three-match ban. This means he will miss matches against Salford City and Newcastle United as well.Kompany will also have to deal with the absence of Michael Obafemi (hamstring), Hjalmar Ekdal (knee), and Darko Churlinov (blood poisoning) in the game against the Red Devils. Vitinho's knee issue will need to be assessed in the next few days, but Jordan Beyer should be available after dealing with cramps.
With Foster suspended, Jay Rodriguez is a likely replacement in the striker position. However, Aaron Ramsey, Mike Tresor, Anass Zaroury, and Benson Manuel will also be competing for a spot in the attacking third.
As for Manchester United, their coach Ten Hag didn't find many positives in their recent loss to Bayern Munich. However, there were no new injury concerns after the game, which is a relief given that they already have 11 players unavailable for various reasons.
Raphael Varane and Mason Mount participated in team training earlier in the week, but Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo had individual sessions. Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (thigh), Tyrell Malacia (knee), and Amad Diallo (knee) remain unavailable, as do wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho, who are dealing with personal issues.
Harry Maguire was also unable to play against Bayern Munich due to a minor muscular problem, and it's uncertain whether he will recover in time for Saturday's match. This leaves Ten Hag with limited options for making changes to the lineup once again.
POSSIBLE LINE-UPS
Burnley possible starting lineup:Trafford; Roberts, Al-Dakhil, O'Shea, Taylor; Cullen, Brownhill; Zaroury, Ramsey, Koleosho; Amdouni
Manchester United possible starting lineup:
Onana; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Reguilon; Casemiro, McTominay; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund
EXPERT PREDICTION
Burnley 1-2 Manchester United
Both teams have been giving up goals in their recent games, so Manchester United's defense may also struggle. However, Manchester United has strong attackers, and they can try to score a lot of goals to win the game away from home and make up for their recent difficulties.
