Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu is set to return to Girona on a loan deal, just one year after leaving the club. Barcelona paid around €3.4 million (£2.9 million) to bring Romeu from Girona last summer, with the 32-year-old signing a three-year contract.

Romeu was signed to fill the gap left by veteran Sergio Busquets, who departed Barcelona at the end of the 2022-23 season. Despite his arrival, Romeu struggled to secure a regular spot in Xavi’s lineup, making 17 starts in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Even with the change in management to Hansi Flick, Romeu’s situation has not improved, leading to his impending return to Girona. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Girona has agreed to a loan deal for Romeu, and the player is expected to undergo a medical this weekend.

Barcelona confirmed that Romeu has left their training camp in the USA and released a video of him bidding farewell to Flick and club president Joan Laporta. Girona will use Romeu to replace Alex Garcia, who moved to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer.

Romeu was a key player for Girona during his previous stint, starting all 33 La Liga matches in the 2022-23 season. His experience will be valuable for Girona as they prepare for their first Champions League campaign after finishing third last season.

Although Romeu won't be available for Girona's friendly against Napoli on Saturday, he could join the team for their matches next weekend, including a game against Newcastle United on August 9 and a fixture against Bournemouth on August 10.
