Honduras has been ordered to play their next home match behind closed doors after Mexico’s coach, Javier Aguirre, was struck by a full can of beer during a Concacaf Nations League match.

The incident occurred as Aguirre was walking towards Honduras' coach Reinaldo Rueda for a post-match handshake, following Honduras' 2-0 win in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final.

The can hit Aguirre in the face, leaving him with blood pouring down his face. In response, Concacaf launched an investigation and took action against Honduras for "failing to implement adequate stadium security measures." As part of the sanctions, the Honduran football federation was fined, and Concacaf warned that harsher penalties could follow if similar incidents happen in the future.

The Mexican Football Federation condemned the attack on Aguirre, stating such behavior "has no place in our sport." Honduras coach Rueda also expressed disappointment, saying the incident tainted his team’s victory.

Concacaf also mentioned they are investigating a separate disciplinary case related to Aguirre’s conduct during the match.

The second leg of the quarter-final will take place on 20 November. The winner will advance to the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, which will be hosted in Canada and the United States.
