England held off a spirited second-half comeback from Fiji, preventing the Pacific nation from reaching their first-ever Rugby World Cup semi-final in an electrifying quarter-final clash at the Orange Velodrome.

Steve Borthwick's team, driven by a remarkable performance at number eight by Ben Earl, endured a tough, physically demanding contest to secure a 30-24 victory. This win paves the way for a showdown in the semi-finals, where they will face either France or South Africa.

Fiji had previously stunned England during the latter's challenging summer preparations, securing their first-ever victory over the team. However, during the first 40 minutes of this encounter, England dominated, especially in their work at the breakdown. Manu Tuilagi scored his first try for England since November 2021 in the 14th minute, maneuvering past a side-on tackle. Nine minutes later, Joe Marchant crossed the try line, taking advantage of a dazed Marcus Smith receiving on-field medical treatment.

Vinaya Habosi was temporarily sent off for a collision with the injured Smith, but even with 14 players, Fiji managed to score through Viliame Mata, who used a clever feint to create space and dived over in the 28th minute.

A couple of Owen Farrell's penalties extended England's lead to 11 points before half-time. The England captain added another three points in the 54th minute, but their lead was threatened in the 67th minute.

Fiji brilliantly moved the ball from right to left, exploiting England's defensive gaps. Although Jonny May made an incredible last-ditch tackle to halt Waisea Nayacalevu, Peni Ravai crossed the try line moments later.

Suddenly, England's game plan was in disarray, and just a minute later, Fiji leveled the score at 24-24. Isoa Nasilasila and Vilimoni Botitu executed a two-on-one attack, and Nasilasila assisted Botitu for an easy try, with Simione Kuruvoli converting it.

However, England regained control in the final 10 minutes with a Farrell drop goal and a penalty, dashing Fiji's dreams of a historic semi-final. Courtney Lawes sealed the deal with a crucial turnover in the 86th minute, sending England to the semi-finals.
