Liverpool star Darwin Nunez and other Uruguay players were involved in a brawl with Colombian fans after their 1-0 Copa America semifinal defeat on Wednesday.
Television footage showed Nunez throwing punches at Colombian supporters after jumping into the stands at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium following the heated loss.

Uruguay central defender Jose Maria Gimenez explained that players entered the fray out of concern for their families' safety. "This is a disaster. Our family was in danger. We had to go to the stands to take out our loved ones, including newborn babies," said the Atletico Madrid player.

"There wasn't a single police officer. I hope those organizing this event are more careful with the families. Every game this happens because some people can't handle a few drinks."

Most spectators supported Colombia, but there was no separation between them and the Uruguayan fans.

While punches were thrown, several Uruguay players climbed into the crowd, seemingly to protect their families, with Nunez being one of the prominent figures. The fighting continued for several minutes until the police intervened.

A group of about 80-100 Uruguayan fans stayed in the stadium, on the field, long after the rest of the spectators had left.

Ugly scenes also erupted on the field after the final whistle, with players and staff from both teams involved in a mass melee at the center circle following Colombia's victory.
